To fly
in the talons of a great horned owl
not many live to tell the tale
including you
by no means was it an undignified death
but the beginning of a great adventure
you are absorbed into the wise and majestic
you become the eyes of the night
The keeper of the forest
watchful and patient
you were a martyr of nature
you shed your body
gaining strength and perspective
you fly
you are the spirit of the night
Maya
Maybe God called her outside that night
And told her it was time.
The past few days she was awfully nice.
But we didn't think much of why.
Dusk is always dangerous
Safety disappears like the sun
hide her from the eyes of the wilderness
keep her safe form harm
Cherish every moment
Before she escapes into the night
to indulge her curiosity
from the prison of her life
Despite the endless luxuries
Indoors is such a bore
Away into the light she went
Somewhere in the darkness out our door
Now all I have is memories
and blankets covered with fur
The feeling of the softest white
The comfort of her purr
It must have been her time to go
God must have set her free
Return to the wild of her heart
The wilderness watching over me.
And told her it was time.
The past few days she was awfully nice.

Hidden Hearts
Somewhere engraved on a piece of wood
In the basement of my childhood
I professed my love for you
Inside of every heart I drew
Now I've grown up and so have you
And my love belongs to someone new
All past wounds have long since healed
But even scars can sometimes feel
Someday my confession will be discovered
The bones of infatuation uncovered
Stumbled upon by some children at play
Ghost writing that never fades away
Somewhere engraved on a piece of wood
In the basement of my childhood
I professed my love for you
Permanent ink, black and blue.
News
From a safe distance
Through a screen
I watch the carnage
Devastation somewhere on the globe
At first my eyes continue with curiosity
My stomach twists with guilt
but I can't look away
Is there a message to receive?
I search for a defence to my gawking
Images of catastrophe and pain
The people cling to hope and life
Humanity is stripped, wet and naked
The whole meaning of living unfolds
I learn that there is something tangible
An awesome presence all around us
The beauty of the white crest on the horizon
Peaceful silence on the beach
Unaware of the great power
Free and unrestrained
All illusions of immortality washed away
Everything fragile is broken
Violently washed away
The only thing left is awareness
Tears and prayers flood the wreckage
Acknowledging life and death
A message is sent through the waves
Across the whole world
We all return to the earth
Only the spirit is alive
The flickering light of changing images
Reflecting in my eyes
Spreading the news
Listen to them.
They are the survivors
They know the truth.

Tree Pose
Remember me standing tall, hands outstretched, head lifted
Far from where I started, here is where I've drifted
Remember me, balanced, rooted in solid foundation
Passive now, my grey body, haven of crustaceans
Remember me with energy connecting earth and sky
I rock against a muddy shore, submitting to the ocean tides
Remember how my silhouette swayed with the gentle breeze
See my twisted limbs, rigid, infecund against the windy seas
Remember my canopy, you took shelter in the shade
Bare and hollow on the shore, beginning to decay.
Remember strength, endurance, the essence of the arbour.
The lapping of the soft black waves, the quiet of the harbour.

Swimming Point
The future and the past have finally met
crashing together, heavy and dark like water
One fades away, the other catches up
My body aches with disappointment
My eyes too exhausted to cry
I sink into the abyss, surrender my breath
Everything has changed.
Yet, people continue on around me, unaffected, unaware
What difference does it make
if I awake from my dreams
Everything is still the same.
The sea is vast, unending, unpredictable
A distant ship sails into the horizon
and I float here, just where I left off.
